Public Safety Programs

At New Jersey City University (NJCU), we take pride in offering a comprehensive Public Safety program through our Office of Adult and Continuing Education. Our non-credit courses are designed for first responders such as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, police officers, firefighters, and rescuers, as well as workers in various industries who require safety certifications. Gain the essential skills and knowledge needed to ensure workplace and community safety.

Classes will be held throughout the semester on the main campus of NJCU.


Food Handler ServSafe Training

ServSafe Food Safety Manager

Fall Schedule

This class is aimed at owners, managers or person in charge of the operation of a business where food is prepared for human consumption such as restaurants, buffets, take-away food, etc. It trains them with the knowledge to properly implement the most current food safety standards and how to apply them in their workplace; also with the knowledge acquired in this class you will be able to train your employees. The ServSafe certification is recognized in most jurisdictions where a Food Protection Manager is required and have a validity period of 5 years.


ServSafe Food Handler (Businesses Only)

This course is designed to equip participants with fundamental food safety knowledge required for food handlers in any food service establishment. It covers essential topics such as personal hygiene, cross-contamination prevention, time and temperature control, cleaning and sanitization, and safe food handling practices. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to implement proper food safety protocols to minimize foodborne illness risks and maintain a safe food environment. Successful completion may lead to ServSafe certification.

Capacitación ServSafe para Manipuladores de Alimentos
Este curso está diseñado para equipar a los participantes con conocimientos fundamentales de seguridad alimentaria requeridos para los manipuladores de alimentos en cualquier establecimiento de servicio de alimentos. Cubre temas esenciales como la higiene personal, la prevención de la contaminación cruzada, el control de tiempo y temperatura, la limpieza y desinfección, y las prácticas seguras de manipulación de alimentos. Silvana Restrepo, Founder of SR Food Safety Solutions, has over 12 years of experience helping entrepreneurs, restaurants, and small food businesses implement food safety practices. She specializes in ensuring compliance with regulations, improving safety standards, particularly within the Latino/Hispanic food industry in NJ. A passionate entrepreneur and baker, Silvana enjoys connecting with fellow food enthusiasts. Outside of work, she’s a devoted mother of four, active in her Catholic church, and loves baking for her family.

American Red Cross CPR Certification

This four-hour certification course equips healthcare workers, police officers, firefighters, and EMS professionals with lifesaving CPR techniques, including chest compressions, rescue breathing, and AED usage. Certification is valid for two years.


OSHA 30-Hour Construction

Cost: $695

Location: NJCU Campus

This four-day, intensive OSHA Outreach course covers a wide range of safety topics specific to the construction industry. It provides a deep dive into workplace hazard identification, reduction, and prevention.


OSHA 30-Hour General Industry

Fall Schedule

Designed for the general industry, this course covers an extensive list of safety topics to help employers and employees understand their responsibilities under the OSH Act and implement best practices for hazard control.


OSHA 10-Hour Construction

This two-day OSHA Outreach course provides critical training on workplace safety in construction, focusing on hazard identification, avoidance, and prevention. Participants will receive an OSHA Construction 10-Hour wallet card upon completion.

OSHA 10-Hour General Industry

TBD
This course offers workers and employers essential awareness training on general industry safety, emphasizing hazard prevention and control. Participants will receive an OSHA General Industry 10-Hour card upon completion.

Jim Poesl

Jim Poesl is a highly experienced Certified Safety Professional with over 30 years in the environmental service industry. He holds certifications in Occupational Safety and Health from the Rutgers Office of Public Health Practice. Jim has partnered with NJCU to deliver training in OSHA Construction, General Industry, Hazardous Materials, Disaster Response, Maritime Industry, and more. As the host of Safety FM's "Safety Wars," Jim brings real-world knowledge and a passion for safety to every class he teaches.
