Applying for Certification
Thank you for choosing New Jersey City University for your educator preparation program!
How the certification process works:
- If you are completing a degree program, apply for Graduation Clearance.
- Create an account (if you do not already have one).
- Complete this online form and upload the required documents:
- After NJCU nominates you for certification, you will receive an email notification from the state with the subject: Your Teaching Certificate Nomination.
- Log in to NJEdCert to accept the nomination and pay the required fee to the state.
Required documents:
- Official transcripts for required courses taken at other institutions.
- (if applicable).
- Copies of current New Jersey licenses (if applicable).
- Employment verification letters on official letterhead with the job title and years of employment (if applicable).
Please note that applications will be processed after your transcript record is closed and/or your degree is posted by the Registrar’s Office. December degrees are posted by January 31, and spring degrees are posted by June 30​​.

Additional Requirements by Certification
- English OPI/WPT and second language OPI/WPT (not required for candidates with a CE in Bilingual/Bicultural Ed)
- Copies of all NJ instructional certificates
- English OPI/WPT (not required for candidates with a CE in ESL)
- Copies of all NJ instructional certificates
- Copy of NJ instructional certificate
- Verification of employment letter from the board of education validating the number of years of teaching experience
- School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA 6990)
- An official transcript of the graduate degree if it was not earned at NJCU
- Copy of standard or provisional NJ instructional or educational services license; the standard certificate must have been issued at least 5 years ago.
- Verification of employment letter from the board of education validating 5 years of licensed experience in a school setting, stating the discipline taught while employed
Verification of employment letter from the principal or superintendent verifying 2 years of successful teaching experience. This letter must include the dates of employment and the positions held within the timeframes listed.
Copy of NJ instructional certificate. Candidates without a NJ instructional certificate must attach a letter from the Board of Education verifying completion of a year-long supervised residence program.
- An official transcript of the graduate degree if it was not earned at NJCU
- Copy of NJ standard instructional or educational services certificate issued at least 3 years ago
- Verification of employment letter from a district administrator validating at least 3 years of teaching experience with a standard certificate. The letter must reference the standard certificate provided and state the discipline taught while employed.
- Copy of CEAS or Standard NJ instructional certificate
- Verification of employment letter on district/agency letterhead validating the number of years of teaching experience
