I lived inJapan for 10+ yearsof my childhood starting from birth. I was browsing the Internet so I could find something exActly like this. Although I don’t have the pleasure of living there now, I will forever love Japan and await the day I can step off the plane at Narita for good.

From what we know today, the iPad runs the iPhone OS. Unless there are some big changes to that OS and some unannounced iPad features coming, here is why you can’t use the iPad without owning another computer:

You can’t load OS updates without downloading them through iTunes on a Mac or PC.

You can’t backup and restore your entire iPad without having a Mac or PC. The only alternative would be cloud-based storage for certain data, but not all.

You can’t activate AT&T data service without connecting to a Mac or PC.

If you don’t have definitive answers to counter these facts, you can’t say definitively that the iPad is a standalone “new iMac.”

Why can’t use use the iPad without having another computer. I’d heard that you can download content from iTMS directly to the iPad. Is that not true? Since it has virtual keyboard you should be able to create your own data and use it in calendars and iWork Touch. Supposedly, iPad users can transfer files from their cameras using some dongles.

I know you’d be unable to rip CDs or movies to the iPad without another computer since the iPad doesn’t support optical drives. I already have a few computers so I’d just be buying the iPad as an extra alternative device.

Of course, the iPad won’t replace “real” computers, Art. That is not its purpose.

The “real” computer market is already being served by desktops and notebooks. That is why the world wide computer market is stagnant; it is a replacement market. What Apple hopes to do is to EXPAND the marketplace by creating computers which are made for ordinary people who do not like or use computers, now.

Even we experienced computer users will like the iPad for lightweight viewing. We don’t need a one size fits all mentality here. Computers are getting cheap enough that we can have many which serve different needs.

There is a place in this world for “real” number crunching machines, but very few ordinary people need them.

Those people among us who dislike or fear computers need to be served too. Just take it for guaranteed that the iPad was not designed for you. Many non technical or anti-technological people will love it.

I think you could be correct. It is nearly independent from the Mac line. In fact I think it is more nearly related to the internet. I do plan to use it in conjunction with a Mac but I will purchase the iWork apps for the iPad and I believe it will replace my laptop. Apple has made a fashion statement where a conventional laptop will appear ‘old fashioned’.

Steve Jobs never said the iPad would replace a computer; he said the iPad would be better than a computer for some tasks. He said the iPad is a mobile device positioned between the iPhone/Touch and the MacBook. He hopes customers will own all three.

The iPad is targeted at iPhone/Touch users; specifically, users who sometimes wish the screen was bigger. That was implied in Steve’s assertion that 75 million people already know how to use it. They are they target. The iPad is also targeted at MacBook users who find reading on a laptop too clumsy in certain situations – like portrait mode.

One thing is true about Apple. There is little overlap in their product lineup. They rarely design a product that competes with their other products. For instance, other companies build “Desktop replacement” notebooks. Apple redesigned their Desktops to maintain clear distinctions. They sell a 17″ notebook, and a 27″ Desktop. One does not replace the other.

You need iTunes to sync the iPad and use it the first time. How is that “standalone” ? you still need a Mac or PC for that, no ?

Its a big iPod Touch. Nothing magical or revolutionary about it. Once again, Steve Jobs proves he is all hype. The iPad will not replace real computers.
