TV.com
I always loved TV tome and I’ve been using it all the time. I am more a TV person than a movie person, so for me it just made a lot of sense to have a tool like IMDB but for TV. Now, the other day I was looking for info about a character in the series “Oz” and so I typed http://www.tvtome.com/Oz in my browser (Firefox), but I got redirected to http://www.tv.com/oz/show/108/summary.html instead. At first, I was happy for them that they got the domain, but it was a bit suspicious that they got it just like that, so I looked at the bottom of the page and discovered that CNET bought TV tome back in January, and I was the only one who missed that info, and who wasn’t expecting the move…
Now, I am all for doing business and making money, but the pages are now heavier and bulkier, and telling me stuff like what other shows I would like if I like “Oz”. Overall, it’s not so bad, but the website looks like it’s trying too much and too hard to be “cool” and I would prefer if they kept it simpler. Not everyone is Amazon.
One example of CNET screwing with me: while http://www.tvtome.com/Oz redirects http://www.tv.com/oz/show/108/summary.html, http://www.tv.com/oz/
on the other hand, just lands on a 404 error page. This is so silly… To sum up my opinion on this site, I would say I am very happy that TV tome got cash, I am happy that CNET bought a good website to add to their network, BUT I hope they don’t screw with it too much until I get stuck without a proper TV resource website and they abandon it because people like me just stopped visiting it eventually.
What surprises me the most is that Amazon didn’t buy it first. It would have made so much sense…
